LECTURE 7
08/10/2018
This is week, our lecture was a presentation from one of group in our class. Their topic of the day is 'Type Design Methodology'. From the lecture, what I gained and understood is about how to research and create fonts. I type design methodology, there are 5 steps which are briefing, sketching, digitising, testing and, name and format. On the other hand, we were introduced to glyphs and the 8 special characters which are dashes, ellipsis, bullet, copyright and trademark, quotes, primes, degree and arithmetic symbols. After that, the group also introduced us on kerning, spacing between two letters, where these are very important when we are creating fonts. This is because it will affect the design of the font and also the readability and legibility.

Here is the PDF file of presentation slides.

PROJECT 1

My first tryout:
This is my initial idea. I thought I wanted to do a person is pulling the words with string.

Process 1

Process 2

Process 3

Process 4

Process 5

Process 6
I wanted to put a background colour, but it looks very odd and halfway done.
Final Outcome (First Attempt)
Mr Vinod the whole artwork does not has a focus point and this is not typosexual. It does not show the intimacy between the designer and the type, like how the designer play the type.

Reference 1

Reference 2

Reference 3

Reference 4
I researched some dancing and modeling poses to get more inspiration. Lastly, I chose reference 3 to work on.

Original
Trying out on the original picture
I tried it out on the original background. Mr Shamsul and Mr Vinod suggested me to try on a solid background, either black or white.

Process
Final Key Artwork
This is my final key artwork. I chose a grey background instead of black and white because the colour tone I used in here is from the range black to white. To better present the word, I used a grey background instead.

FEEDBACK

week 6: For general feedback, Mr Vinod said Typosexual means the intimacy between the designer and the type. The project has to indicate how the designer plays with the type creatively. For specific feedback, Mr Vinod said this project just like a logo to your exhibition, something represents me and my typographic exhibition.
week 7: For general feedback, in project 2, we have to use the previous project to develop a poster. The poster has to include typographic system. For specific feedback, the outcome of project 1 is not typosexual enough. The words are too scattered and does not have to focus point where readers could not get what it is when they first saw it.

REFLECTION

Experiences
week 5: We did a group presentation today. It was quite fun doing presentation in class even though I did not present well.
week 6: I was doing my key artwork for Typosexual Typographic Exhibition.
week 7: My key artwork is done so I was doing some tryouts for the poster.

Observations
week 5: I have observed that our presentation slides are not informative enough and are a bit boring.
week 6: I observed that my key artwork is not measured well as it looks off center even though I aligned them.
week 7: After trying out composing for the poster, I think the information I place makes the poster looked packed. I should not leave too much space for some certain part.

Findings
week 5: I found that I am very poor at communication of types. I should work more on that.
week 6: I found that my key artwork could try add some colours as it might look dull in black and white.
week 7: I found that typographic systems sometimes can mix with more than one and the outcome might look great. I also found that, my atwork is more suitable in black and white instead of colours.

Stop stealing Sheep & find out how type works (Second Edition) by Erik Spiekermann & E.M. Ginger

Type with a purpose:
  • Choosing typefaces for a design job is a very similar experience to packing your suitcase in a rush and you can't decide what to put into it.
  • Design is all about striking a balance between practicality and aesthetics.
  • The typographic equivalents are those typefaces that are comfortable to read.
  • "Loose fit" is actually a typesetting term describing letters that have a comfortable amount of space between them.
  • Most type is used for business communication of one sort or another, so it has to conform to written and unwritten rules of the corporate world.
